Lucy Baker


Lucy Baker is a mezzo-soprano currently in her second year at the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago where she has sung the role of Karolka/Jenufa. While getting her Master of Music from the Curtis Institute of Music, she sang the roles of Ariodante and Dorabella/Così fan tutte. During her time at DePaul University, Baker sang the roles of Cherubino/Le nozze di Figaro and Hansel. In concert, Baker has appeared with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and Chautauqua Symphony and was a 2022 fellow at Ravinia's Steans Music Institute.

Peter Barber


Peter Barber is an American bass-baritone and graduate of the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts. Currently, he finds himself in the Arizona Opera studio, where he has performed Basilio in The Barber of Seville, Capulet in Romeo and Juliette, and Masetto in Don Giovanni. Peter has performed over 30 operatic roles, specializing in Mozart bass-baritone repertoire, such as: title roles in The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, Sarastro, Guglielmo, Don Alfonso, and more. Outside of the opera world, he has built a YouTube audience of over 160,000 subscribers for his musical analysis videos and mesmerizing covers of contemporary music.

Gabrielle Barkidjija


Mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Barkidjija is an avid performer of new music and has sung many regional and world premieres. This season on the operatic stage, she received critical acclaim for her performance of Dodo in Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves, and covered the Fox in Leoš Janácek’s Cunning Little Vixen, both with Detroit Opera. Equally comfortable on the concert stage, this season, Ms. Barkidjija participated in Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio under the direction of Renée Fleming, and made her Carnegie Hall debut as the mezzo-soprano soloist in the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s “Everyone, Everywhere,” with the Cecilia Chorus of New York.

Marcellina in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro

 

 

Lauren Carroll


Iowa native, Lauren Carroll, soprano recently finished her Master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. While there, she performed the roles of Belinda (Dido & Aeneas), Rose Maurrant (Street Scene), and Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte). Recent engagements include being an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera (2022,23). While there, she covered the role of Helena (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and performed scenes as Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), and Marguerite (Faust). Ms. Carroll is a two-time Encouragement Award Winner in the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition. She is passionate about new vocal work, and has premiered two song cycles.

Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel

 

 

Vinicius Costa


Vinícius Costa, winner of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Best English Song Performance at the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, gained international visibility in 2022 at age 27. He also won first place in the Linus Lerner Brazilian and Latin American Singing Contests and received a special Jury prize in the IVC Song Competition. He has performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Aspen Music Tent, and Theatre Basel. His roles include Sarastro and Zuniga, with solo performances in works by Bach and Glass. Educated in Brazil and Switzerland, he trained with notable maestros. In 2024, he will join the LA Opera Studio.

Sarah Fleiss 


American soprano Sarah Fleiss is pursuing her Master's degree at the Curtis Institute of Music. This past season, she sang the Vixen in Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen at Curtis, as the soprano soloist in the Fauré Requiem with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and in Poulenc's Gloria and Dvorák's Te Deum with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. She looks forward to working with William Christie and Paul Agnew as a part of Les Arts Florissants' 12th edition of Le Jardin des Voix. She is the recipient of grants from the Gerda Lissner, Opera Index, and George London Foundations.

Sofia Gotch-Caruana


California Native, Sofia Gotch Caruana is an expressive performer and lover of literature. Sofia finds that her connection to text empowers her performances and to be colorful, vulnerable, and complex.  Sofia received her MM from the Manhattan School of Music, where she continues studying with Ruth Golden as a PPD candidate (ant.’25). She received her BA in Music and English (Creative Writing Emphasis) from the University of Puget Sound in 2019.

Matthew Aucoin's Music for New Bodies 

 

 

Caitlin Gotimer


This summer, Ms. Gotimer makes her European debut with Deutsche Oper Berlin for Don Giovanni (Donna Anna), performs Countess in Le nozze di Figaro at the Aspen Music Festival, and covers Musetta in La bohème with the Bravo Vail Music Festival. Upcoming engagements include Pagliacci (Nedda) with Pittsburgh Opera; Don Giovanni (Donna Anna cover) and La fiamma (Silvana cover/La Voce) with Deutsche Oper Berlin, and La bohème (Mimì) with Arizona Opera. In 2023/24, she performed Juliette in Roméo et Juliette with Arizona Opera, made her Palm Beach Opera and Dayton Opera debuts as Tosca, and was a 2023 Operalia finalist.

Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha


Mexican-American baritone Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha, from San Diego, California, is a recent graduate of the Juilliard School, earning his master's degree studying under the tutelage of Kevin Short. This year, Trevor has been awarded a 2024 Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Foundation, and 1st Prize in the Giulio Gari Foundation International Vocal Competition and Opera at Florham International Vocal Competition. Trevor made his professional debut with Opera Saratoga in 2023, singing Dottore Malatesta in Don Pasquale, and will be joining the Opera Studio at Volksoper Wien for their 2024-26 seasons.

Magdalena Kuzma


Polish American soprano Magdalena Kuzma is a recent graduate of the Lindemann Young Artist Program. Roles at the Metropolitan Opera include Sister Catherine (Dead Man Walking), Papagena (The Magic Flute), Giannetta (L'Elisir d'Amore), and Yvette (La Rondine). Recent engagements include Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) at Aspen, Juliette (Roméo et Juliette) at the Glimmerglass Festival, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at Opera Orlando, Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore) at Yale Opera, and Frasquita (Carmen) at the Santa Fe Opera. An avid recitalist, she has given solo recitals at Wigmore Hall, the Green Music Center, Merkin Hall, and the Newport Classical Music Festival, among others.

Sophia Maekawa


Mezzo Soprano, Sophia Maekawa from Kyoto, Japan, is a Ryan Opera Center ensemble member at Lyric Opera of Chicago. This season at Lyric she looks forward to covering Cherubino/Le nozze di Figaro and performing Lee Ann/ The Listeners. Last season she appeared as Tisbe/La Cenerentola and Pastuchyna/Jenufa. In 2022, she was a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist, understudying Rosina/Il barbiere di Siviglia, and a 2021 Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Ms. Maekawa’s a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where she performed many roles including: Ariodante (title role) and Albert Herring (Nancy).

Alexis Seminario


Italian-American soprano Alexis Seminario spent the last year engaged with Palm Beach Opera as an Apprentice Artist. Last season, Alexis was a Studio Artist with The Atlanta Opera, where she covered Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), and Woglinde/Wellgunde (Das Rheingold). Alexis spent two summers as an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera. Alexis is a proud alumna of the Houston Grand Opera’s YAVA. Alexis is a Presser Scholar and an Anna Sosenko Assist Trust Grant recipient. Competition Highlights: Third place | Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, Encouragement Award | 2023 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

Margaret Macaira Shannon


Texas native Mezzo-Soprano Margaret Macaira Shannon was an Apprentice Artist with Sarasota Opera for their 2024 Winter Season. Margaret won the Sarasota Opera Guild Ann J. O’Donnell Award for Outstanding Apprentice Artist, covered Mercedes in Carmen and sang choruses of Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Luisa Miller. Margaret completed her Masters of Music and Bachelors of Music at Manhattan School of Music. Roles: Mercedes(Carmen), Principessa (Suor Angelica), Dritte Dame(Die Zauberflöte), Madame de Croissy (Dialogues of the Carmelites). Margaret won an Encouragement Award in the 41st International Meistersinger Competition in Graz, Austria. She is a former NCAA Division I volleyball player.

Sughoon Han


Sunghoon Han, a distinguished bass-baritone from Seoul, holds a Bachelor of Music with honors from Yonsei University and is pursuing an AD at Jacobs School of Music under Carol Vaness. Han debuted in the U.S. at Jacobs, starring in "La Finta Giardiniera" and "Eugene Onegin". Winner of the Laffont Competition Indiana District and third in the Central Region, he has excelled as a bass soloist in Verdi's "Requiem" and performed roles like Colline and Leporello in Korea. Han will soon participate in the Aspen Festival as a Renee Fleming artist, debuting as Bartolo in "Le Nozze di Figaro".

Yue Wu


Yue Wu,Chinese bass-baritone, has just completed his second year as an artist-in-residence at AVA. He returns to the Aspen Festival for the second year as a Reneé Fleming Artist. Last summer he sang the lead role of Katzumi Hosokawa in Bel Canto in Aspen. In AVA's last season he sang Bartolo in The Barber of Seville and Lord Rochefort in Anna Bolena. This summer he will cover Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro.  He holds master degree from the Mannes College of Music. He is also an alumnus of Renée Fleming's SongStudio and the Music Academy of the West.
