ANNA CLYNE: ATLAS, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (AMFS Co-Commission)
--
SCHUBERT: Symphony No. 9 in C major, D. 944, “The Great”

06

Winner of a 2013 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America's 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year Award, Jeremy Denk has been hailed by The New York Times as "a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs, in whatever combination — both for his penetrating intellectual engagement with the music and for the generosity of his playing. Here he'll be the soloist for British composer Anna Clyne's ATLAS, a four-movement piano concerto inspired by and titled after the monumental, four-volume publication of the German artist Gerhard Richter. This collection includes over 5000 photographs, drawings and sketches compiled or created by Richter since 1962. Clyne's piece has been described as a brilliantly coloured musical scrapbook, artfully assembled" (The Guardian), "cinematic" (D Magazine), and "lrapturous … a complex yet inviting new work" (Wall Street Journal).

Schubert's final symphony is a profound and monumental work that was never performed in his lifetime. The manuscript of the "Great" C Major was discovered by Robert Schumann during an impromptu visit to Schubert's brother. Schumann wrote, "[It], including the date and a number of corrections, is entirely in Schubert's hand, which often appears to have been flying as fast as his pen could go." Schumann showed the symphony to his friend Mendelssohn, who premiered it to rave reviews.

Don't miss these two mighty works conducted by the dynamic Jane Glover!
