The AMFS is committed to increasing access to music education for local youth, families, and community members in Aspen and its surrounding valley. In alignment with the AMFS mission to respect and nurture the Aspen Idea and community through music, we encourage AMFS students to participate in a variety of teaching and community outreach opportunities while in Aspen.
In Aspen, students have the chance to strengthen their community engagement skills by participating in several valuable offerings from the AMFS Education and Community department, such as:
- Teaching in the P.A.L.S. (Passes and Lessons Scholarship) and/or Festival Lessons programs: A great opportunity to refine pedagogical skills and mentor a local student while earning an income.
- Gigging through the Hire a Musician program: This initiative connects students with paid performance opportunities, including weddings, corporate events, busking, and more.
- Participating in the AMFS Mariachi Workshop: This workshop brings together professional mariachi, teaching artists, and local students to learn and perform Mariachi music. AMFS students can mentor local middle and high school musicians from the AMFS AfterWorks program, which offers after-school music classes throughout the year, and perform alongside them in a culminating community concert.
- Engaging in children’s programming: AMFS students can perform at Tunes and Tales—music combined with storytelling—or demonstrate their instrument at the Family Concert for local kids and families, fostering a love for music in the next generation!
