Richard Woodhams, oboe

Richard Woodhams, an Aspen Music Festival and School artist-faculty member since 2000, has appeared as a soloist on numerous occasions throughout the United States and in Asia with the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he is principal oboist. In the last decade he has given premieres of chamber works by William Bolcom, Chuck Holdeman, Thea Musgrave, Bernard Rands, Ned Rorem, Adam Wernick, Richard Wernick, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. He has also collaborated in chamber music with many notable musicians including Christoph Eschenbach, Itzhak Perlman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and the Guarneri, Shanghai, and Tokyo string quartets. Mr. Woodhams is a graduate of The Curtis Institute, where he studied with John de Lancie, and has been on its faculty since 1985 teaching both the oboe and woodwind orchestral repertoire. His former students occupy prominent positions in orchestras both in the U.S. and abroad. He began his career with the Saint Louis Symphony, appointed by Walter Susskind. Mr. Woodhams first appeared as a soloist at the Aspen Music Festival in 1977 performing Richard Strauss's Oboe Concerto with James Conlon conducting, and during the 2009 season, he performed Christopher Rouse's Oboe Concerto with David Robertson conducting.
