BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 7 in A major, op. 92
Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg wrote Arena in 1995 for a conductors' competition. The quasi-Romantic sound world may remind you of Mahler, Berg, and even Lindberg's predecessor and compatriot Sibelius.
Richard Wagner called Beethoven's 7th Symphony "the apotheosis of the dance," and even performed a solo dance of the entire work with Liszt playing his own piano transcription. At its premiere, Beethoven remarked that it was one of his best works. The achingly beautiful slow movement was so well-received it had to be encored, and later received many performances separate from the complete work. The sheer joy and vitality of the symphony's finale will take your breath away!
