Stephen King is the Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Voice and co-chair of vocal studies at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He is also director of vocal instruction for the famed Houston Grand Opera Studio; head of vocal instruction for the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program of Los Angeles Opera; and a member of the artist-faculties of the Aspen Music Festival and School; the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute for Singers; the International Meistersinger Academy in Neumarkt, Germany; and the U.K.’s Samling Masterclasses. Internationally recognized for teaching professional and emerging artists, Stephen King’s work is informed by his years of singing and twenty-five years devoted to training aspiring singers. His professional studio of over one hundred singers appear on the stages of the world’s major opera houses including the Metropolitan, Vienna, Covent Garden, La Scala, Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston. His students have won virtually every major competition, including the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Vinas, Operalia, Richard Tucker, George London, Belvedere, and numerous prizes in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. His teaching is profiled in the forthcoming books, Great Teachers on Great Singing by Robin Rice (Inside View Press) and Spectrum of Voices: Prominent American Voice Teachers Discuss the Teaching of Singing by Elizabeth Blades (2nd Edition, Rowman and Littlefield). Stephen King is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and resides in Houston, Texas with wife, Amy and sons, Matt and Stewart.
