ASPEN, COLORADO—The Aspen Music Festival and School has announced it will delay  its  opening  by  2  weeks, moving the start date from July 2 to July 16 and shortening the season to six weeks. There will be some adjustments to programming July 16 to August 23 that will be announced as known. Anyone who holds a ticket to an affected event or holds a pass will be notified of the changes and will have the option to donate their tickets, receive a full refund or 2021 season credit, or exchange their tickets for another event. All changes will also be communicated by the AMFS’s email notifications and will be posted on the AMFS website at www.aspenmusicfestival.com.

Says AMFS President and CEO Alan Fletcher: “Our hope is this extra time will make travel more possible, and our belief is that we can, together, still create a superb educational experience and season of performances in this abridged time. While uncertainty still rules the day, this delay reflects our ability, nearly four months out, to plan effectively and remain flexible in a dynamic situation. We will be actively monitoring developments, and we will revisit this in mid-May to be more certain of the feasibility of the plan.”

He continues, “We plan with equal parts realism and optimism. Our first priority is the health and safety of all Festival participants and of our community. But we do not forget that our work is important, and if this summer we can safely bring performances to the stage, foster growth in the next generation of musicians, and together forge meaning through music, we will.”

“We are guided by what is best for the whole: for the collective health of the community, which is paramount, and also by the artist-faculty and guest artists who have so much of themselves to share, the Board and donors who are standing by us with astounding commitment, the audience members who find joy and solace in our concerts and in the blossoming of our young artists, those young student artists themselves whose dreams have not dimmed, and the staff who are socially distanced but more connected than ever as they work sometimes round-the-clock at all kinds of jerry-rigged home offices.”

The full season schedule is currently online and printed calendars are being mailed shortly. Ticket buyers and pass buyers can buy with the assurance they can refund or exchange their tickets or purchased passes at any time.

------------

The AMFS’s 71st season offers two themes: “Beethoven’s Revolution” includes a deep dive into Beethoven with some of the world’s foremost interpreters, while a parallel theme, “Uncommon Women of Note,” presents a powerful  coming together of music and musical luminaries that looks at ambition, desire and identity through the presence of a much-needed female lens. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in America, this musical exploration is anchored by a rarely heard Virgil Thomson/Gertrude Stein opera about Susan B. Anthony. In addition, Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers launch their unique new opera program, Aspen Opera Theater.
